Instagram is one of my favorite social media platforms, because it allows me to get to know my followers, and let them see who I am as a person, not just a business owner. Instagram gives you the unique opportunity to let people into your personal life, in a relatable way, which is HUGE when it comes to the whole ‘know, like, and trust’ thing that is so important for your brand to achieve!

To get the most out of your Insta efforts, try this:

  • Complete your profile. You would be surprised how often I see a business owner posting to Instagram, without a completed profile. Eek! Be sure you’ve uploaded a profile picture, created a short and sweet bio that tells visitors who you are, what you do, and why they should follow you, and left a link to your website. Keep in mind your bio is the only place you can leave a clickable link, so be strategic with where you lead people! Your home page isn’t always the right answer. Actually, it rarely is! Consider creating a landing page (like this one!) that is designed specifically for the lovely people that find you on Instagram!
  • Be mindful of your hashtags! The key is to use tags that have at least 5,000 images, but less than 300,000. This way, you’re inserting your images into a search that other people are searching for, but you won’t be completely lost in the sea of pictures!
  • Figure out a signature style for your images, and stick to it! Always size your images the same way, and use a similar “recipe” when you edit images. I use the app Afterlight to edit all my images before I post them, and try to always use the same brightness and contrast on each one. I don’t use filters on my photos, but if you use them, try to use the same one each time!
  • Get personal! Think of ways to connect with your audience, in an authentic way. If you know the people you’d love to reach are busy moms that appreciate a good cocktail and sunbathing, share a shot of your chocolate martini, or your kids doing a mean cannonball into the pool.
  • Infuse your business into your images. If you sell products, this is an easy one, but for services based business owners, it can get a little tricky. You can show people what you do by uploading quotes, sneak peaks into your daily grind, or showcasing a lifestyle if you help your clients achieve financial freedom, a profitable business, a healthy lifestyle, etc.
  • Interact like it’s your job! Instagram is all about forming connections with people, so take the time to interact with your followers! The goal is to turn your followers into loyal fans, and eventually, customers! Similarly, be sure to browse your feed periodically and interact with people you follow. Leaving love on images is a great way to increase your following!
